Tiny Mittens and Stocking Cap Christmas Ornaments

MATERIALS:

• 4 grams of fingering weight yarn
in 2 colours (CA & CB)
• Size 2.25 mm (1 US) set of 4
short double pointed needles
• Darning needle

Whip up these adorable little mittens and stocking cap as a tree ornament or a fun addition to your Christmas gift packages. It only takes a wee bit of leftover fingering weight yarn and is sure to be a fun Christmas surprise.

SIZE: Size is dependent on yarn used and personal gauge. Finished Stocking Cap from end to end measures around 5” and 1.25 across when laid flat. The mittens measure 1.75” in length by 1” wide.

GAUGE: 12 sts = (3.2 cm) 1.25 in on 2.25 mm needles in stockinette

Stitches Used:
Inc1: lift bar between stitches and knit into the back of it.

Mittens:

Cast on 12 sts using long tail cast on with CA (red), place 4 sts on each of 3 needles and arrange to work in the round, being careful not to twist.

Rnds 1-5: k1, p1 around.
Rnd 6: Increase as follows: (k1, inc1, k2, inc1, k1) 3x. (6 sts per needle) Drop CA but don’t cut
Rnds 7 & 8: With CB (white): Knit.
Rnd 9: (k2 with CB, k1 with CA) repeat around. Drop CB but don’t cut
Rnd 10: With CA: p3, knit to end.
Rnd 11: Knit.  Drop CB but don’t cut
Rnds 12&13: With CA: knit.
Rnd 14: (k2 red, k1 white) repeat around. Drop CB but don’t cut
Rnd 15&16: With CA: Knit. Cut CA yarn.

Thread on needle and gently fasten to purl bumps on inside from previous row and pull the end to inside mitten to hide it. It helps to get the ends fastened and drawn inside mitten so there are less tails hanging to get tangled.

Rnd 17: With CB: (k2tog, k1) around. 12 sts
Rnd 18: Knit.
Rnd 19: (k2tog, k1) around. 8 sts
Rnd 20: K2tog around. 4 sts. Break yarn, thread through sts, pull up and secure. Hide end inside mitten.

Thumb
Pick up 3 purl bumps from Rnd 10 with needle
Rnd 1: With CB: Knit 3. With a 2nd needle, pick up and knit 2 sts under the 3, working in the round.
Rnd 2: Knit. Cut CB
Rnds 3-5: With CA: knit.
Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull up and secure. Hide end inside mitten.

Toque
Cast on 24 sts using long tail cast on with CA (red), place 8 sts on each of 3 needles and arrange to work in the round, being careful not to twist.

Rnds 1-5: k1, p1 around.
Rnd 6: Knit. Drop CA but don’t cut
Rnds 7&8: With CB: Knit.
Rnd 9: (k2 with CB, k1 with CA) repeat around. Drop CA but don’t cut
Rnds 10&11: With CB: knit. Drop CB but don’t cut
Rnds 12&13: With CA: knit.
Rnd 14: (k4, k2tog) around. (20 sts) Drop CA but don’t cut
Rnd 15: With CB: Knit.
Rnd 16: (k3, k2tog) around. (16 sts)
Rnd 17: knit. Drop CB but don’t cut
Rnd 18: With CA: (k2, k2tog) around. (12 sts)
Rnd 19: knit.
Rnd 20: (k1, k2tog) around. (8 sts) Drop CA but don’t cut
Rnd 21: With CB: Knit 1 rnd.
Rnd 22: (k2tog) around. (4 sts)
Rnd 23: knit. Drop CB but don’t cut

Put all 4 sts on 1 needle and work like icord as follows:
Rnds 24-35: Knit 3 rnds with CA, knit 3 rnds with CB, carrying colour not in use up the middle.
Rnd 36: With CA: k1, k2tog, k1 for 3 sts.
Rnds 37& 38: knit as established in icord.
Rnds 39-41: With CB: knit as established in icord.
Rnds 42-53: knit 3 rnds with CA, knit 3 rnds with CB, as in rnds 24-35.

Finishing:
With CA: k3tog and pull both CA and CB tails through the loop.

Tassel: Create a tassel by looping both colours through the hat tip twice and wrapping around the tip to secure. Pull tightly and thread ends on a sharp needle and pass them down through wraps to secure. Trim tassel ends as desired
